  • That's totally fine, that's the point why we're using <hgroup>. That way you can provide a sane structure for each section of the page without them colliding with each other, this is way better than any other approach.

  • But you don't use hgroup for usernames from the postbit, You use this:

    Code
    <header>
    <h1 class="username">
    <a data-user-id="1" class="userLink" href="http://beta.woltlab.com/index.php/User/1-Alexander-Ebert/" id="wcf1">
    <span>Alexander Ebert</span>
    </a>
    </h1>
    </header>

    Shouldn't header and h1 be used for more important things than usernames? I don't think that usernames should be given more relevance or as much relevance as the actual content.

    You realize that in html5 things are outlined for each section individually?

    Example:

    While we just use h1, all of these h1 are whiegthed according to their environment, so the outline is:

    • Heading #1
      [list=1]
    • Heading #2
      [list=1]
    • Heading #3
    • Heading #4

    [/list]

    [/list]

    Why? What is the difference in a CMS or in a forum? Either you believe google *does* recognise a html5 outline correctly (which i strongly believe they do), or you don't believe in it. But believing they do it in CMSes and not in forums is just plain ... wrong.

  • Yes, there is, but either you belvieve google does recognize the outline correctly, or you don't. In the latter case, you would insist on using only one h1 in a CMS as well. There is no reason to assume google would operate differtly on different contents. It does not.

  • By wrapping user name in h1 tags, you tell google that the user names are as much important as articles

    No, you don't, draw a damn outline.

    Google rewards you with good structured content

    exactly, that's why the semantic approach is the best.

    Besides, the whole discussion is pointless. WoltLab uses semantic html5, and uses it correctly. You can either be fine with it and believe google does recognise it correctly (which you should believe, given that html5 is the future of the web), or you can not beleieve it, in which case have fun to customize the templates to get whatever kind of micro-seo-optimization you think you can gain.

  • Yes, you do. Learn your frickin' SEO basics.

    Do me a favor, read upon the semantics of <hn> tags in html5 and when you did, come back. I have no intention to shout against a wall. As i said before, Woltlab uses sematically correct html5. Either you believe the guys at google are smart enough to get a simple html5 outline done, or you don't. In the latter case, do what you think is best and customize the templates. All other people, who appreciate semantic correct html5 source code and trust in google will thank you.

    Oh btw, google sometimes does not even display things that are in <hn> tags in the snippets, but for example <p> tags. What does that tell us? they don't give headings as much importance as you obviously think they do.

  • The problem here is you assume that just because it's html5 Google doesn't care anymore whether h1, h2, h3 etc. is used.

    Your statement is also an assumption.
