The current demo system has been in active duty since early 2014 and has served tens of thousands of demo instances every year so far. Despite its age, it has been working smoothly most of the time and required little to no maintenance effort whatsoever. However, we have been building up a new demo system lately that will be used to replace the existing system, featuring both a contained-based approach using Docker and state-of-the-art hardware reyling on Intel's Xeon Gold 6140 processors.
Unfortunately, the old demo system has recently shown some sort of strange hiccups that have caught our attention and usually this is a sign of a soon-failing hardware component. Eventually, one of the disk drives failed this morning, causing a full system crash (Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init! exitcode=0x00000007) and although no data has been lost due to disk redundancy, the system is now in an unfavorable state. We have chosen not to replace the failed disk and instead opted to bring it back up and continue to serve the existing demos.
Meanwhile, we're performing the final steps and tests to migrate over to the new demo system. Until this process is completed, the demo system will not be processing new requests and any pending requests for new demo instances are on hold. We're expecting the new system to be available tomorrow.
