Please follow the guide at https://community.woltlab.com/thread/266333-…412#post1662412, it contains all relevant parts for the upgrade. If you are using packages from 3rd party update servers, you'll most likely have to add different servers for them too.
Thanks Alexander and yes, I'm reading the guide like a book.
What should I do if I get a message conflict on a theme which I've already uninstalled?

Styles themselves cannot prevent an upgrade, but the packages that were used to install them can. If you've removed the theme already, then you should remove the package with the same name too.
ha ha, yes...forgot that.
bring Back a backup and try again.
Usually an error message should appear at some point.

You're saying that I should abandon the upgrade and that the website is broken?
I've left it doing this until I get a definitive answer.
The upgrade hasn't been done the full way. I would recommend to get back on the last backup you made before starting the backup and try again. As you said you extended the runtime within your hosting control panel so it might get out better.
In any case, an error message should appear in deeper logs(e.g. php or webserver).
How do I restore the latest backup?
I don't even need importer anyway, but Now it's not responding.
How do I restore the latest backup?
Ask your hosting provider or, when you saved it offline, upload the data.
How do I restore the latest backup?
That depends on your hosting provider. You should wipe out your www-directory and clear the database and bring back the latest backup manually.

Well now the forum's completely broken and restoring a back up is not working because it's trying to restore over a partial upgrade to 3.1.1, which isn't going to work. At least that's my assumption.
So, what you're saying is to delete the contents of the home directory and the existing database and upload the backups manually?
The full Cpanel backup and then the dbase backup?
Which directory do I delete the contents of? Home? or public_html only?
And where do I clear the database?
I'm using Cpanel for this and have never done it before.
