I think, it's better with this scenario:
when the image source is from internal URL, the image should not be re-uploaded.
but, if it comes from external url it should be uploaded, then insert the image to the post.

testing from local computer:
/home/username/Pictures/56f44ca38aa542032307333226b321d0-400x400.png
pasting from my ubuntu will not upload the image, just pasting the path of it.

I see, drag and drop have a condition, attachments tab must be active, first drag image to formAttachmentContent then to editor box.
I think it's not convenient, user should be able to drag and drop attachment directly to editor box, without the hassle above.
Drag & drop works smoothly on Windows and Mac, possibly the behavior on Linux is slightly different, causing it to be more restrictive?
pasting image from facebook, can this be done even the image is not public?
If you actually copy an image, the upload will use the copy on your private computer, therefore any permissions are irrelevant. You could instead copy the image link and use it to embed, this way permissions are somewhat checked.

Pasting image url, doesn't embed images automatically, does it work as design?

It doesn't, but you can use the toolbar icon to insert them by URL.

I assume everyone here is testing out the "Insert Images" button. I know how to use the "media" button to insert images but so far I'm at a loss to figure out the proper syntax to use the insert images button. I assume this is f0r linking to an external photo from something like google drive or something. What is an example of what to type into the "source" and "link" boxes? I pasted the share link from a photo on google drive into the link box but it didn't seem to work. Do we use BB code maybe? No idea.

As simple as it gets, the source field expects the pure URL to an image, for instance my avatar is available at https://www.woltlab.com/images/avatars/gravatars/b83715576066396a589a8e159099c071-128.png.
Please note that Google Drive might have other (authentication) mechanics that prevent embedding content directly. https://gsuiteupdates.googleblog.com/2015/08/deprec…support-in.html indicates that hotlinking images from Google Drive is no longer supported, but there may be alternative approaches to this. When in doubt, please reach out to their customer support and ask them for a solution.
