@SoftCreatR to have a really extensive instruction to do so on his website. Maybe he is willing to publish these here as well. I don't have it saved anywhere...
Nevertheless, @Cyperghost is currently developing a plugin at which one can offer several different avatars for its users to select. The thread is in German though... It's working with WCF 2.1 and 2.0. But it's still in beta phase.
I'm also interested in this.

I saved it
add to .htaccess:
I need instructions like a three year old
to your home directory - where your wcf folder is located.
the file has to be named .htaccess and not .htaccess.txt
(copy it via Filezilla and rename it then)
Edit:
the "custom" folder hast to be in the same directory as the .htaccess file
It should look like this (if you know what i mean):
/custom/
/...
/...
/...
/wcf/
/.htaccess
the custom folder (with your new avatar) and the .htaccess have to go one folder up
not into the wcf folder...
AND: You have to pay attention to case sensitivity!
custum != Custom
Did that and recleared the cache and nothing
nope, you didn't!
If so i woul find the new Avatar via http://www.appalachiantrailcafe.net/custom/replacementAvatar.jpg
But it is not there...
You have to name the folder custom and not Custom
Simply rename the folder and it will work.,
EDIT:
Finaly it works
I deleted the Custom folder. I recreated it as custom and added the replacementAvatar.jpg and cleared the cache. Nothing
I forgot to clear my browser cache. Thank you for your assistance and patience.
thanks for the answers, I will do that too, I was wondering though isn't it possible to just replace the image instead?
Like go here ^wcf/images/avatars/avatar-default.svg$ and upload + replace the avatar-default with my own ?
this is also possible, but you have to have a .svg image.
would an update revert back to the old default avatar if you just change the image?
maybe, but not necessarily.
The way i described above (via .htaccess) will not be reverted by an update.

That won't work. Every single WCF update would restore the original image.
